「文明の創造、宗教篇」昭和27(1952)年

およそ天地の真理を知る上において、経（たて）と緯（よこ）の意味を知る事が最も肝要である。この事は今までにも幾度となく説いて来たが、なお一層詳しく徹底的に書いてみよう。それについてはまず根本的認識である。それは私が常にいう日は火で、火は経に燃ゆるものであり、月はその反対に水で緯に流動するものである。従って日の本質は高さであり、月の本質は広さである。この理によって今地球を説明してみると、地上の空界は水素が緯に流動しており、火素は経に上下を貫いている。つまり経緯の精が綾（あや）のようになっており、布地のごときものである。しかもそれが想像を絶する程の密度であって、この事実として卑近な例ではあるが、人間が横臥（おうが）すれば寒いのは、緯に流れている水の精によるからであり、起きて経になれば暖かいのは、経に昇降している火の精によるからである。また火は霊的、精神的、陽であり、水は体的、物質的、陰である。この理は世界の東西文化をみてもよく判る。東洋は経であるから霊的、精神的であるに対し、西洋は緯で体的物質的であるから、今日のごとき科学文化が発達したのである。宗教においても仏教は経であるから、経文といって経の字を用いており、祖先を崇拝し、子孫を重視すると共に、孤立的であるに反し、キリスト教は祖先を祀らず、夫婦愛を基調とし、隣人愛を本義とし、どこまでも国際的緯の拡がりである。

右のごとく、今日までの世界は、東洋文化の精神的に偏した思想と、西洋文化の物質的に偏した思想とであったがため、どちらも極端に偏する以上、一切が巧くゆかなかったのである。従って人類の苦悩はいつになっても解決出来ず、世界の混乱は停止するところを知らない有様である。こうみてくるとどうしても経緯両方が結ばれなければ、完全な文化は生れないはずである。としたらこの経緯の結ばる時こそ問題であるが、驚くべしそれが今日であり、その力の行使こそ本教の使命であって、本教のバッジがよくそれを表わしている。次に私は前から言っている事だが、観音力の働きもそれであって、すなわち経にも非ず、緯にも非ず、といって経でもあり、緯でもあり、いずれにも偏らない応変自在であるから、千変万化、自由無碍というのもこの意味である。この理によって人間の心のあり方もそうなくてはならない。すなわち心は常に原則として経緯結びの中心に置くべきで、これを一言にいえば常識である。本教が特に常識を重んずるのはそういう訳なのである。ところが世間常識人はまことに平凡に見らるるもので、反って偏る人の方が偉く見えるものであるから、この点大いに注意すべきである。事実この偏在精神の持主が、偉く見ゆるのは大抵一時的であって大成は出来ない。いつかは必ず失敗する事は、歴史がよく示している。

右のごとく経は高いが小さく、緯は低いが大きいのが真理である。従って私はこの方針で進んでいるので、例えば箱根と熱海がそうである。箱根の聖地は高くて小さいが、熱海のそれは低くて大きいのである。また経は霊であるから箱根を先に造り、熱海は体であるから後に造るので、これが霊主体従の順序であるからで、この通りにすると実に順調にうまくゆくが、少しでもこれを狂わせると、必ず故障が起るのはほとんど絶対的といってもいい。実に神様の御経綸こそ、一糸紊（みだ）れずまことに整然たるものである。

Vertical and Horizontal View

To know the truth of the universe in general, it is most important to know the meaning of vertical and horizontal view. I have already explained it many times. Now I　describe it more precisely and thoroughly. Then I first explain how to recognise it fundamentally. That is, as I always say, the sun refers to the fire which burns vertically, whereas the moon refers to water which flows horizontally. Therefore, height is the nature of the sun, whereas breadth is the nature of the moon.

When the earth is explained by this theory, the element of water flows horizontally and the element of fire penetrates up and down in the atmosphere of the earth. In a word, the vertical and horizontal spirit is in the twill-like state. It is like woven fabric but its density is beyond our imagination. Let me give you a good example to prove this fact. When people lie down, they feel cold as the spirit of water flows horizontally. Then, when they get up, they feel warm as the spirit of fire goes up and down. The fire has a spiritual, mental and positive aspect, whereas water has a physical, material and negative aspect.

This theory also applies to an eastern and western culture very much. The east represents vertical culture, which has a spiritual and mental aspect. On the other hand, the west represents a horizontal one, which has physical and material aspects. Therefore, the culture based on science was developed in the west. In religions, Buddhism shows vertical nature. Buddhist scriptures mean vertical writings in Japanese, so that they imply vertical nature, too. Buddhism is relatively secluded along with that the believers of Buddhism respect for ancestors and focus on descendants. On the other hand, the believers of Christianity don’t worship ancestors. Their keynote is married love and their fundamental principle is the neighbourly love. It spreads internationally, or horizontally without limit.

In this way, there co-exist two types of thoughts; that based on the eastern culture which attaches too much importance to spiritual nature and that based on the western one which attaches too much importance to material nature. As both thoughts are extremely inclined to one side, everything went wrong. Therefore, humankind cannot solve their problem forever. The world is still in a confused condition and no one can predict when this condition comes to an end. What all this suggests is the vertical and horizontal culture should be united. Otherwise, complete culture cannot be born. If so, the question is when they are united. It is surprisingly now and our mission is to exert the power of their unification. The design of our pin badge shows this very much.

As l said before, Kannon-Riki or the power of Kannon acts in the same way. That is the state of acting neither vertically nor horizontally while acting vertically and horizontally. It is the state of being neutral and flexible, which means the state of ever-changing and being versatile. For this reason, the state of the human mind should follow this way. In other words, the human heart should be in the centre of vertically and horizontally crossing. It means common sense in a word. Therefore, we especially prize it. However, people with common sense look mediocre in society. On the contrary, biased people look rather great. You should be very careful about them. Most of those spiritually biased people temporarily look great. However, they fall short of success and fail someday after all. History proves this very well.

As I said above, a vertical viewpoint is indeed high but narrow, whereas a horizontal viewpoint is low but wide. Therefore, I am proceeding in this way. The good example is in Hakone and Atami. A holly land in Hakone is small and located in a high place, whereas in Atami is large and located in a lower place. Because of a spiritual or vertical place, the holy land is first constructed in Hakone. As Atami represents material nature, the holy land in Atami is constructed after that in Hakone is completed. This procedure follows the order which spirits leads and form follows. When following this order, everything goes very well. When getting out of this even a little, however, it is almost certain that faults occur. In this way, God’s plan is precisely carried out in perfect order.
